An acetylated form of the amino acid L-tyrosine, made by attaching an acetyl group to improve solubility. Tyrosine is a building block the body uses to make dopamine and norepinephrine.

Why it’s used

Taken by some for perceived support of mental focus, mood, or performance under stress, on the reasoning that it feeds neurotransmitter production.

What the evidence says

Most human research on tyrosine and cognitive or stress performance uses plain L-tyrosine, often in military or sleep-deprivation studies, not the acetylated form sold in supplements. Some research suggests acetyl-L-tyrosine may convert to usable tyrosine less efficiently than the free amino acid, which means results from L-tyrosine studies may not transfer directly to this form.

A reviewer looking to resolve this should search for L-tyrosine (not acetyl-L-tyrosine) trials involving acute stress, cold, or sleep deprivation, and separately for any pharmacokinetic comparison of the two forms.
