Agmatine is a compound made in the body from the amino acid arginine, and produced commercially by fermentation for use as a supplement ingredient.

Why it’s used

Taken by some who exercise, often marketed for muscle 'pump' during resistance training or as a nootropic for focus.

What the evidence says

Human trial data is sparse. A handful of small studies have looked at agmatine sulfate for exercise performance or pain, but results are inconsistent and sample sizes are small. There is no NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheet on agmatine, and no settled evidence for the effects it is marketed for.

Context

Where studied, trials have generally used agmatine sulfate rather than agmatine base, complicating dose comparisons across the limited literature.

Insufficient dataToo little has been studied to say either way.
