A carotenoid pigment found in orange and yellow vegetables such as carrots and pumpkins. It is a provitamin A compound, meaning the body can convert some of it to vitamin A, though less efficiently than beta-carotene.
Why it’s used
Taken as an antioxidant-type carotenoid, sometimes as part of mixed-carotenoid formulas marketed for general antioxidant support.
What the evidence says
NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements discusses carotenoids mainly in the context of vitamin A and eye health, with beta-carotene as the best-studied form. Alpha-carotene specifically has been examined mostly in observational nutrition studies linking higher blood levels to lower rates of certain chronic conditions, but this kind of study cannot show that supplementing with alpha-carotene itself causes any benefit.
Context
Most alpha-carotene data comes from dietary intake and blood-level studies rather than trials of an isolated alpha-carotene supplement, so no supplement dose has been established as effective.
Rumors
Smokers should not take alpha-carotene supplements because excess carotenes are linked to premature death in smokers.
