Alpha-GPC is a choline-containing compound derived from soy or sunflower lecithin, used as a source of choline that crosses into the brain more readily than some other choline forms.
Why it’s used
Taken to support memory and cognitive function, and sometimes used before exercise on the theory it supports acetylcholine availability.

What the evidence says
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of seven randomized trials and one cohort study found that alpha-GPC, alone or combined with the drug donepezil, was associated with better scores on cognition, function, and behavior measures in patients with adult-onset cognitive impairment linked to cerebrovascular injury, compared with placebo or other treatments. This is clinical-outcome evidence in a patient population with diagnosed neurological/cognitive disorders, not simply age-related decline, and several of the pooled trials combined alpha-GPC with a prescription cholinesterase inhibitor rather than testing it alone. The second cited study examined physical and psychomotor performance in healthy young men and does not address memory or older adults with cognitive decline, so it does not contribute evidence to this specific claim.
