A compound that occurs naturally in the body as an intermediate in the Krebs cycle, the cell's basic energy-producing pathway. In supplements it is usually bound to a mineral or amino acid, such as calcium or arginine, to form a salt.

Why it’s used

Taken by some for exercise performance, recovery, or, more recently, as part of interest in general aging-related research.

What the evidence says

Human oral trial data on alpha-ketoglutarate supplementation is sparse. Most of the research generating interest in AKG, including work on lifespan and markers of aging, has been done in animal models, and it is not established whether or at what dose those findings translate to people.
