A byproduct of beer brewing made from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, dried and sold as a nutritional supplement rich in B vitamins, protein, and trace minerals including chromium.

Why it’s used

Taken as a general nutritional supplement, and sometimes specifically for its chromium content, which has been studied in relation to blood sugar regulation.

What the evidence is for

blood glucose regulation via chromium content.

What the evidence says

Chromium-containing brewer's yeast has been studied for effects on blood glucose and insulin sensitivity, with mixed and generally modest results; the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that evidence for chromium supplementation's effects on blood sugar is inconsistent. Evidence for brewer's yeast as a whole product, beyond its chromium content, is limited.

Context

Studies examining chromium from yeast sources have generally used doses in the range typical of chromium supplementation studies, but results have not been consistent across trials.
