What the evidence says
NIH ODS confirms vitamin C's established role in collagen formation, immune function, and iron absorption, and in preventing scurvy at very low intakes. Evidence for benefits beyond correcting low intake, such as reducing common colds in the general population, is weaker and inconsistent. The calcium-buffered form is not shown to work differently from ascorbic acid itself once absorbed.
