A small molecule made of two linked amino acids, beta-alanine and histidine, found naturally in muscle and brain tissue.

Why it’s used

Taken as an antioxidant, or for its proposed role in buffering acid buildup in muscle and reducing protein glycation associated with aging.

What the evidence says

Oral carnosine itself has been studied in only a limited number of small human trials, complicated by the fact that an enzyme in blood breaks it down before much reaches tissue. Its precursor, beta-alanine, has more established research behind it for raising muscle carnosine levels and supporting short, high-intensity exercise performance, but that evidence does not transfer directly to supplements sold as carnosine itself.

Context

Research distinguishes clearly between oral carnosine and oral beta-alanine, since the latter is absorbed intact and converted to carnosine in muscle, while direct carnosine supplementation faces greater breakdown in circulation.
