An antioxidant enzyme naturally produced by the body and also found in many foods, which breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
Why it’s used
Taken by some as a general antioxidant supplement.
What the evidence says
Catalase is a protein, and proteins are generally broken down by digestion before absorption, which raises questions about whether an oral catalase supplement can act as intact enzyme in the body. There is little to no clinical trial evidence in humans supporting a specific effect from oral catalase supplementation.
