Cellulase is an enzyme, typically produced by fungal or microbial fermentation, that breaks down cellulose, the fibrous structural material in plant cell walls, into smaller sugar units.
Why it’s used
Included in some digestive enzyme blends on the theory that it may help break down plant fiber during digestion, since the human digestive tract does not naturally produce enzymes that digest cellulose.
What the evidence says
There is very little published human clinical research on oral cellulase supplements specifically, and no major health authority fact sheet establishes an effect on digestion or nutrient absorption in people. What is known comes mainly from its industrial and laboratory use in breaking down plant fiber outside the body.
