A form of the trace mineral chromium bound to picolinic acid to improve absorption, commonly used in supplements.

Why it’s used

Taken by some with an interest in blood sugar regulation or weight management.

What the evidence is for

blood sugar and insulin sensitivity claims.

What the evidence says

NIH ODS notes that chromium is involved in macronutrient metabolism, but that evidence for chromium picolinate improving insulin sensitivity, blood sugar, or body composition in people without diagnosed chromium deficiency is inconsistent and generally weak. A dietary deficiency of chromium is rare.

Context

NIH ODS lists an adequate intake for adults of about 20 to 35 mcg per day from diet, far below the mg-level doses (commonly 200 to 1,000 mcg) used in many chromium picolinate trials, and no tolerable upper intake level has been established.
