A flavonoid compound derived from citrus fruits, often chemically converted (hesperidin methylated to diosmin) and used in a micronized form in venous health supplements.
Why it’s used
Taken to support vein health, particularly for symptoms associated with chronic venous insufficiency such as leg heaviness or swelling.
What the evidence is for
easing symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency.
What the evidence says
Systematic reviews of micronized flavonoid preparations containing diosmin, often combined with hesperidin, show some benefit for symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency and for hemorrhoid symptoms, based on clinical trials. The evidence base is moderate in size and quality, and results are more consistent for symptom relief than for underlying disease measures.
Context
Most positive trials use a combined micronized diosmin-hesperidin product rather than diosmin alone, and study populations are typically adults with diagnosed venous disorders rather than the general population.
