In personal care

A member of the paraben family of preservatives, derived from para-hydroxybenzoic acid, used to stop microbial growth in water-containing products.

Why it’s used

Keeps creams, lotions, and other formulas free of bacteria and mold during storage and use, extending shelf life and protecting the consumer from contaminated product.

What the evidence says

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review has found ethylparaben safe as used in cosmetics. Parabens as a class have been studied for weak estrogen-mimicking activity in laboratory settings; the SCCS and CIR have both concluded that short-chain parabens like ethylparaben, at the concentrations used in cosmetics, do not pose a risk to human health.

Context

The SCCS opinion distinguishes short-chain parabens (methyl-, ethyl-) from longer-chain ones (propyl-, butyl-), finding the short-chain forms safe at current use levels; EU regulation permits ethylparaben up to 0.4% individually or 0.8% in combination with other parabens.
