A modified starch, produced by enzymatically rearranging corn or tapioca starch into a highly branched, cyclic structure. It is used as a carbohydrate source in sports and energy products, often marketed as providing a steadier release than simple sugars.

Why it’s used

Taken by some athletes as a carbohydrate source during exercise, on the premise that its structure may empty from the stomach and be absorbed differently than other carbohydrates.

What the evidence says

Published human research on this specific starch form is limited and comes mostly from a small number of studies, several from the manufacturer's own research programs, examining gastric emptying and blood glucose response. There is not yet a body of independent evidence establishing a performance advantage over other carbohydrate sources.
