A genus of large brown seaweed harvested and dried for use in food and supplements, typically valued as a natural source of iodine and other minerals.
Why it’s used
Taken as a mineral source, particularly for iodine, and sometimes marketed loosely in connection with thyroid or metabolic support.
What the evidence says
NIH ODS discusses iodine's established role in thyroid hormone production and the risks of both deficiency and excess, but seaweed-specific iodine content is highly variable and often unlabeled precisely, making dosing from Laminaria itself hard to characterize. Direct evidence for Laminaria as a supplement ingredient, beyond its iodine contribution, is thin.
Context
Iodine content in kelp products has been shown in testing to vary widely between batches and brands, a variability noted in regulatory and academic surveys rather than in a single dosing protocol.
