A genus of red marine algae that deposits calcium and other minerals in its cell walls; the dried, ground material is used as a natural mineral source in supplements.
Why it’s used
Taken as a source of calcium, magnesium, and trace minerals, and sometimes marketed for bone or joint support.
What the evidence says
Some small studies on branded lithothamnion-derived ingredients have examined joint comfort and mineral status, but independent, large-scale human trials are limited, and much of the marketing extends beyond what the research supports.
