An enzyme that breaks maltose, a sugar produced during starch digestion, into two glucose molecules. It occurs naturally in the small intestine and is sometimes included in digestive-enzyme supplement blends, often produced through fermentation.
Why it’s used
Taken to support carbohydrate digestion, typically as part of a broader digestive-enzyme blend aimed at reducing bloating after starchy or sugary meals.
What the evidence says
Maltase's digestive function in the body is well characterized physiologically, but there is very little clinical research on whether supplemental maltase improves digestion or reduces symptoms in people without a diagnosed enzyme deficiency.
