Why it’s used
Effective, inexpensive, and well-tolerated at low concentrations, it protects formulas from spoilage over their shelf life.
What the evidence says
CIR and the SCCS have both reviewed methylparaben and found it safe at the concentrations used in cosmetics. Concerns about parabens mimicking estrogen originated from studies using far higher doses than any cosmetic exposure, and regulatory bodies have not found evidence of harm at real-world use levels. It has a long history of safe use as a preservative.
Context
Applies to both leave-on and rinse-off products; use levels are capped by regulation in the EU and elsewhere, well under any threshold of concern identified in the research.
