A non-proteinogenic amino acid, meaning it is not used to build human proteins, structurally similar to valine. It is marketed in some nitric-oxide-boosting and pre-workout supplements.

Why it’s used

Taken based on animal research suggesting it may inhibit arginase, an enzyme that competes with nitric oxide production for the amino acid arginine.

What the evidence says

Evidence for norvaline comes almost entirely from animal and cell-based studies. There are no substantial published human clinical trials establishing effects of oral norvaline supplementation in people.
