A long-chain fatty alcohol found naturally in wheat germ oil, sugar cane wax, and rice bran; it is one of the components of policosanol mixtures sold as supplements.
Why it’s used
Taken by some for perceived support of exercise performance or stamina, and sometimes alongside policosanol for cholesterol-related purposes.
What the evidence is for
exercise performance and lipid-related outcomes.
What the evidence says
Human trial evidence is limited and mixed. Small older studies suggested possible effects on endurance or reaction time, but later, better-controlled trials — including work on the related compound policosanol — have generally failed to confirm meaningful effects on cholesterol or performance, and the evidence base overall is thin.
Context
Trials have used a range of daily amounts, generally in the low tens of milligrams, but study quality and sample sizes are limited enough that no dosing pattern is well established.
