A compound combining the amino acid ornithine with alpha-ketoglutarate, a molecule involved in cellular energy metabolism. It is marketed mainly in sports nutrition and clinical nutrition contexts.

Why it’s used

Taken by some to support recovery, muscle protein metabolism, or growth hormone release, particularly around exercise.

What the evidence says

Human research on ornithine ketoglutarate is limited and mostly older or small in scale, including some work in critically ill or burn patients receiving it as part of clinical nutrition rather than as a general supplement. Evidence supporting its use by healthy, exercising adults is thin and not well established.

This says what this database holds under these terms. It is not a finding that no research exists.

Context

Where studied, doses and contexts vary widely (clinical enteral or parenteral nutrition versus oral sports-supplement use), which makes it hard to draw a single consistent dosing picture from the literature.

Insufficient dataToo little has been studied to say either way.
