A digestive enzyme normally produced in the stomach, where it breaks proteins down into smaller peptides. Supplemental pepsin is usually derived from animal, often porcine, stomach tissue.
Why it’s used
Taken to support protein digestion, frequently paired with betaine hydrochloride or other digestive aids in combination products.
What the evidence says
Pepsin's digestive role inside the body is well understood physiologically, but there is very little clinical research examining whether taking additional pepsin by mouth improves digestion or symptoms in people whose own stomach enzyme production is normal.
