A small trace amine that occurs naturally in the human brain and in foods such as chocolate. The version sold in supplements is typically made synthetically rather than extracted from food.

Why it’s used

Taken by some for mood, focus, or a feeling of stimulation, based on its role as a brain trace amine.

What the evidence says

Oral PEA is broken down very quickly by an enzyme (monoamine oxidase B) in the gut and liver, so how much reaches the bloodstream or brain after swallowing a supplement is unclear. There is little to no controlled human trial evidence on oral PEA supplementation for any effect.
