A compound the body produces naturally from the amino acid methionine and ATP, involved in numerous methylation reactions throughout the body, sold as a stabilized salt in supplement form.
Why it’s used
Taken to support mood, joint comfort, or liver health.
What the evidence is for
supporting mood in depression and joint symptoms in osteoarthritis.
What the evidence says
A Cochrane review of SAMe for knee or hip osteoarthritis found some evidence of symptom improvement, though study quality varied and effect sizes were often modest. Separate research on depression has suggested effects comparable to some conventional approaches in certain trials, but the overall evidence base includes a limited number of studies, many of them small or short in duration.
Dose studied
400–1600 mg — oral SAMe doses used in depression and osteoarthritis trials.
Context
Trials in depression and osteoarthritis have generally used oral doses in the range of several hundred to over a thousand milligrams per day, and results have varied by study design and duration.
