A protein-digesting enzyme originally isolated from bacteria found in the gut of silkworms. It is produced commercially through fermentation for use in supplements.
Why it’s used
Taken by some for support with inflammation or swelling, including after minor surgery or dental procedures.
What the evidence says
Clinical trials of serratiopeptidase exist but are generally small, older, and of inconsistent quality, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions from the published literature as a whole.
