A digestive enzyme, produced naturally in the small intestine and also derived from yeast or fungal sources for supplement use, that breaks down the sugar sucrose into glucose and fructose.

Why it’s used

Included in digestive enzyme blends taken to support the breakdown of dietary sugar, particularly by people who report sensitivity to sucrose-containing foods.

What the evidence says

There is no NIH ODS fact sheet on sucrase as a supplement ingredient. A purified enzyme replacement exists as a prescription product for a rare inherited condition called congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency, used under medical supervision; this is distinct from general over-the-counter digestive-enzyme supplementation, for which human evidence is minimal.
