A protein-digesting enzyme, normally produced in the pancreas, that is extracted from animal (usually bovine or porcine) pancreatic tissue for use as an ingredient.

Why it’s used

Taken by some to support digestion of dietary protein, and sometimes included in enzyme blends marketed for inflammation or recovery support.

What the evidence says

Oral proteolytic enzyme research — including studies on reducing swelling or supporting recovery — has generally used combination enzyme formulas containing several enzymes (such as bromelain, trypsin, and chymotrypsin together) rather than trypsin alone. Isolated oral trypsin has not been studied to the same degree, and enzymes taken orally face digestion in the gut before absorption, which complicates interpreting any effect.

Context

Evidence appears to exist for multi-enzyme combination products, not for isolated trypsin. A reviewer resolving this would look for trials on named combination formulas (e.g., bromelain-trypsin-rutin blends) rather than trypsin used alone.
