The powdered root of Valeriana wallichii, a species in the same genus as common valerian (Valeriana officinalis), native to the Himalayan region and used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.

Why it’s used

Taken for sleep support and as a calming aid for restlessness or mild anxiety, following its traditional use and the broader reputation of valerian-genus plants for this purpose.

What the evidence says

Most clinical research on valerian for sleep concerns Valeriana officinalis specifically; the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that study results for that species are mixed and that methods vary widely between trials, with no strong, consistent evidence of benefit. Valeriana wallichii has a separate, much thinner research record, and its traditional use overlaps with but is not identical to that of V. officinalis. Because the clinical evidence base does not clearly extend to this species, no effect can be confidently graded here.
