In personal care

The sodium salt of citric acid, the same acid found in citrus fruit. It is manufactured by neutralizing citric acid with a sodium base, not squeezed from lemons.

Why it’s used

A workhorse pH adjuster and buffer. It keeps a formula's acidity steady over time and shelf life, and it can also soften water by binding calcium and magnesium ions, which helps surfactants foam better.

Why it’s used

Used in supplements as a pH buffer, flavor enhancer, or electrolyte source, and separately studied as an alkalizing agent taken before exercise.

What the evidence is for

pre-exercise alkalizing effect on high-intensity exercise performance.

What the evidence says

A systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 30 studies of sodium citrate supplementation in exercising adults found a positive overall effect on high-intensity exercise capacity and performance compared to placebo, alongside measurable increases in blood bicarbonate (a biomarker of extracellular buffering). However, sodium bicarbonate showed a trend toward being more effective than sodium citrate, and the effect size for buffering supplements overall was modest, with credible intervals that included small effects. The abstract does not separate sodium citrate's clinical performance effect size from the pooled buffering-agent category, limiting precision about its standalone magnitude.

Dose studied

0.3–0.5 g — per kilogram body weight dosing used in some pre-exercise sodium citrate loading studies.

Context

Exercise-performance studies have generally used single doses in the range of several grams taken before exercise, with considerable variability in protocol and outcome between studies.
