In personal care

An ester formed from cetyl alcohol, a fatty alcohol, and ethylhexanoic acid. It is a light, non-greasy oil-like liquid used widely in skin and hair products.

Why it’s used

Functions as an emollient, giving products a smooth, silky slip and helping other ingredients spread evenly across skin or hair without feeling heavy.

What the evidence says

The CIR Expert Panel reviewed animal and clinical data for cetyl ethylhexanoate and related alkyl ethylhexanoates, including at concentrations as high as 77.3% in rinse-off products and 52% in leave-on lipstick, and concluded the ingredients are safe as used in cosmetics when formulated to be nonirritating. The assessment relies partly on extrapolation from data on structurally related constituent alcohols rather than ingredient-specific testing for every use. No adverse findings are described in the available abstract text.
