Appears in 4 scanned products.

In personal care

The disodium salt of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), a small synthetic molecule that binds tightly to metal ions.

Why it’s used

Added in small amounts as a chelating agent — it grabs trace metal ions in the formula that could otherwise degrade fragrance, discolor the product, or reduce the effectiveness of preservatives.

What the evidence says

The CIR has reviewed EDTA salts and considers them safe at the low concentrations used in cosmetics. It is not well absorbed through intact skin, and its use in cosmetics is at levels far below those studied for other exposure routes.

Context

Used at very low percentages, usually well under 1 percent, in both rinse-off and leave-on products; its role is purely to stabilize the formula rather than to act on skin.
